Limavady United were left to rue a late, late goal at the BetMcLean Oval, where Daniel Larmour’s header in the fourth minute of stoppage time settled the game in Glentoran’s favour in front of 2,478 supporters.
It was the Roesiders who started the brighter of the two sides. Ronan Wilson sent an early effort over the bar from the edge of the box, and Jamie McGonigle thought he had produced a moment of magic to open the scoring, only for the flag to go up for offside.
Glentoran then took control of the game for a spell and Limavady goalkeeper Marty Gallagher was called into action. He reacted sharply to keep out a Jordan Jenkins attempt and then tipped Ross Clarke’s curling shot round the post. When Jack Malone threatened for the hosts, Daniel Lafferty was on hand with two timely blocks to keep the scoreline level.
The second half was a scrappier, more even contest. McGonigle forced Andrew Mills into a save with a free-kick, while Pat Hoban and substitute Ben Gallagher both went close for the home side. Lafferty was booked on 58 minutes, and the Roesiders made changes of their own, with John Butcher and Aaron Jarvis introduced from the bench.
With a point looking likely, Glentoran struck at the death. Ben Gallagher swung over a corner and Larmour steered the ball home at the back post and spark wild celebrations among the home fans. McGonigle was shown a yellow card in stoppage time, but there was no time left for a reply. Referee Steven Gregg took charge of the match.
It was a disappointing way to lose after such a disciplined display, but there is plenty to build on. Catch the best of the action in the highlights above, and see the Match Centre for the latest fixtures, results and league table.
