Jamie McGonigle’s fifth goal of the season earned Limavady United a 1-0 win over Cliftonville at The Showgrounds, inflicting a third straight defeat on the visitors in front of 790 fans.
McGonigle had already threatened before breaking the deadlock on 19 minutes, lifting a first-time effort over a stranded PJ Morrison and into the empty net after Alfie Gaston’s pressure forced a hurried clearance from the Cliftonville keeper. Limavady dominated the rest of the opening half and came close to doubling their lead — Gaston fired narrowly wide after being teed up by Daniel Lafferty, McGonigle clipped the crossbar with a spectacular effort of his own, and Morrison produced an excellent save to deny a Ruairi Boorman header.
Cliftonville improved after the break and pushed hard for an equaliser. Tiarnan Boorman made a perfectly timed tackle to deny Joe Gormley inside the area, Dean McMaster tested Marty Gallagher from distance, and Kyle McClelland headed against the crossbar from a corner as the visitors laid siege to the Limavady goal in the closing stages. But the Roesiders held firm to see out the win.
It’s a third win in four matches for Limavady United, a remarkable turnaround from the start of the season — see the Match Centre for the latest fixtures, results and league table.
